• 920 yds (840m) #3 dk weight yarn, if made in one color

  per color, made in 4 colors
• G/7 (4.5mm) crochet hook
• Yarn needle

Gauge: 

Each hat motif is 5 in (12.7cm) square

Bag: 19 sts / 6 rounds = 4 in (10cm) in double crochet.

Stitch Guide: 

Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), single crochet (sc), single crochet 2 together (sc2tog), 2 treble crochet cluster (2tr-cl), 3 treble crochet cluster (3tr-cl), and slip stitch (slst).

Instructions:

Hat:

Motif (make 11):

Note: Hat shown in the following color sequence, round 1 Mint Green, round 2 Strawberry, round 3 Foam White and round 4 Sandcastles.

Ch4, slst to 4th ch from hook to form ring.

Round 1: Ch3 (counts as dc), 11dc in ring, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 12 dcs

Round 2: Ch6 (counts as dc, ch3), dc in same st, *1dc in ea of next 2 dcs, (dc, ch3, dc) in next dc. Rep from * 2 more times, 1dc in ea of next 2 dcs, slst to 3rd ch of beg ch6 to join. — 4 ch3 sps, 16 dcs

Round 3: Ch3 (counts as dc), (3dc, ch3, 3dc) in next ch3 sp, *1dc in ea of next 4 dcs, (3dc, ch3, 3dc) in next ch3 sp. Rep from * 2 more times, 1dc in ea of next 3 dcs. Slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 4 ch3 sps, 40 dcs

Round 4: Ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in ea of next 3 dcs, (3dc, ch3, 3dc) in next ch3 sp, *1dc in ea of next 10 dcs, (3dc, ch3, 3dc) in next ch3 sp. Rep from * two more times, 1dc in ea of next 6 dcs, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. Fasten off. — 4 ch3 sps, 64 dcs

Note: When fastening off round 4, leave tails long enough to sew sides of motifs together (approx. 15 in (38.1cm) long.

Assembly:

Join Hat Wall Motifs: Sew 4 motifs together into a ring (hat sides). 

Join Brim Motifs: Sew 6 motifs together into a ring (hat brim).

Crown Assembly: 

Round 1: Slst to join in any ch3 sp on last unjoined motif, ch1, 2sc in same sp, *1sc in ea of next 16 sts, 2sc in next ch3 sp. Rep from* around, slst to first sc at beg of round to join.

Round 2: With right sides facing, line up the crown motif with the four sides of joined hat wall motifs. Working through both thicknesses together, sc in ea st around. Slst to first st at beg of round to join. — 72 joined scs

Hat and Brim Assembly:

Round 1: Working along hat motif edges opposite joined crown, join with slst in any ch sp, ch1, 2sc in same sp, 1sc in next st, *(2sc in next st, 1sc in next st). Rep from * around, counting ea ch sp as a stitch. Slst to top of first sc at beg of round to join. — 108 sts

Round 2: With right sides facing, line up joined hat walls of round 2 with the six sides of joined brim motifs. Working through both thicknesses, sc in ea st around. Slst to first st at beg of round to join. — 108 sts

Brim Edging:

Round 1: Join with slst in any ch sp, ch1, *(sc, ch3, 2dc-cl) in same st, skip 2 sts. Rep from* around, slst to first sc at beg of round to join. — 36 scallops

Finishing:

Weave in loose ends.

Round 22: Ch6 (counts as 1dc for round 22 and ch3 for first section of strap), work 3dc in 4th ch from hook, slst into sp between the 4 sts, [(ch3, 3dc in same sp), slst into sp between the 4 sts]x12, (first handle made), skip 18 dcs, 1dc in ea of next 54 dcs, [(ch3, 3dc in same sp), slst into sp between the 4 sts]x13, (second handle made), skip 18 dcs, 1dc in ea of next 53 dcs, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. Round 5: Fold bag in half. Working through both thicknesses of last round, ch1, skip 1st sc, *sc through next 4 sc2togs on ea side of fold, sc through next 13 sc on ea side of fold, sc through next 4 sc2togs on ea side of fold. Slst to last st at opposite end of fold. Fasten off.
