Polar Nights Free Crochet Pattern Set: A Timeless Motif Collection for Cozy Accessories

If you love elegant crochet motifs and enjoy making coordinated accessories, you’re going to love the Polar Nights Crochet Pattern Set! This stunning crochet design features a set of motifs joined together to create a matching hat, scarf, and fingerless mitts—perfect for stylish layering in chilly weather. Originally published in a magazine over a decade ago (and even making the cover!), this pattern is now available again, newly refreshed and complete with charts for the first time!

A Crochet Classic, Reimagined

The Polar Nights Crochet Pattern Set first debuted in print over ten years ago, capturing the attention of crocheters with its intricate motifs and seamless join-as-you-go construction. The magazine is now out of print, but I’m thrilled to bring this design back—this time with the addition of comprehensive charts to make the instructions even easier to follow.

This set is a beautiful blend of artistry and function, using motifs to create a cohesive and visually stunning winter accessory trio. Whether you’re making it for yourself or as a thoughtful handmade gift, the Polar Nights set is a timeless addition to any wardrobe.

What’s Included in the Pattern Set?

The Polar Nights Crochet Pattern Set includes instructions to make:

  • A stylish hat with a comfortable fit and striking motif design. The crown is a 5-sided modification of the square motif to allow for 5 square motifs around the sides of the hat.
  • A cozy scarf featuring a grid of 3 motifs x  motifs that create a delicate yet warm fabric. In this configuration, you can easily increase the size of the grid to make a shawl, a baby blanket or a large afghan, too!
  • Fingerless mitts that provide both warmth and dexterity, making them perfect for everyday wear.

Each piece is crafted with modular motifs that are joined together as you go, creating a stunning geometric effect that looks both classic and modern.

Key Features of the Pattern

  • Join-as-you-go motif construction – No need for extensive seaming; motifs are connected as you crochet.
  • Charts included for the first time – Making it even easier to follow along and visualize each motif.
  • Versatile and customizable – Adjust the size, color scheme, or yarn weight to suit your style.
  • Great for stash-busting – Use up small amounts of yarn for a multi-colored effect or keep it sleek with a monochrome palette.

Yarn & Materials

The original Polar Nights design was made using a #4 worsted weight, soft and warm yarn, that provides excellent stitch definition for the motifs. You can use any worsted-weight yarn that suits your preference, whether you want a wooly winter set for maximum warmth or a lighter cotton blend for transitional weather.

Who Is This Pattern For?

This pattern is perfect for intermediate crocheters who enjoy working with motifs and want to expand their skills with a project that’s both engaging and rewarding. If you’ve never tried join-as-you-go motif construction before, this is a great introduction to the technique!
