Medallion Marvel Shawl Pattern: Crochet a Stunning Diamond Formation Shawl with Square and Triangle Motifs

Looking for a crochet project that’s both easy and impressive? Introducing the Medallion Marvel Shawl Pattern! This stunning shawl features a beautiful combination of square and triangle motifs joined as you go in a diamond formation. Crafted with worsted weight yarn, this shawl is quick to make, making it the perfect gift for your loved ones.

Pattern Overview:

The Medallion Marvel Shawl begins with a circle medallion that transforms into a square motif. The magic happens when you join the motifs together; the corners create a striking 4-pointed star medallion, adding an extra layer of elegance to your shawl. With an easy 3-row scallop edging, this shawl is a delightful project from start to finish.

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn
  • Crochet hook suitable for the yarn weight
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Key Features:

  • Versatile Design: The pattern includes both square and triangle motifs, allowing you to create a unique diamond formation.
  • Quick and Easy: Using worsted weight yarn means your shawl will work up quickly, perfect for last-minute gifts.
  • Beautiful Edging: The simple 3-row scallop edging adds a professional finish to your shawl.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Create the Circle Medallion:

Begin with a magic ring and crochet rounds 1 – 4 to form a circle. This will be the center of your square motif.

2. Transform the Circle into a Square:

Continue crocheting (rounds 5 – 9), following the pattern and chart to turn your circle into a square. This is where the magic of the Medallion Marvel Shawl starts to take shape.

3. Join the Motifs:

As you crochet each square and triangle motif, join them as you go to form a diamond formation with slip stitches. The corners of each motif will create a 4-pointed star medallion, adding a stunning visual effect.

4. Add the Edging:

Once all motifs are joined, finish your shawl with a simple 3-row scallop edging. This adds a beautiful, delicate touch to your finished piece.

Tips for Success:

  • Block Your Motifs: Blocking your crochet motif shawl will ensure the motifs are uniform in size and shape.
  • Use a Consistent Yarn and Tension: Stick to the same weight of yarn if you are mixing yarns and be mindful of your tension for a cohesive look.
  • Take Your Time Joining: Ensure your joins are secure and your ends are woven in sufficiently and neatly for a professional finish.
  • Do turn your work at the end of each row. The triangle motif is worked in rows.
  • Do not turn work at the end of each round. The square motif is worked in rounds.

The Medallion Marvel Shawl is a versatile and beautiful project that will impress everyone who sees it. Whether you’re making it as a gift or for yourself, this shawl is sure to become a favorite. Washing instructions (from the manufacturer): Mega Ball Aran is practical and easy to maintain since it’s machine washable at 104 degrees F.

Pro tip (also from the manufacturer): Due to the skein’s size, we recommend starting it from the outside. Starting the yarn from the center might cause more tangles as the center part might collapse on itself once you have used a little bit of yarn.

Note: This is not a repeating pattern. You could make this triangle  as large as you want, instead of using it as a motif.

Joining Motifs:

Using the schematic as your guide, on your final row/round (row/round 8) replace every ch3 sp with a ch3 join (ch1, slst to adjacent motif’s ch3 sp, ch1) along each side you are joining.

Edging:

Row 1: Working along lower edge of triangle shape of shawl (see schematic), Join with slst in first corner, ch3 (counts as dc), work 2dc in ea ch sp, 1dc in ea dc across, placing extra stitches in ea corner (first corner 5 dcs, center corner 7 dcs, last corner 5 dcs).

Note: You need a multiple of 9 sts to continue to row 2. Depending on the number of motifs or the gauge of your motifs (using a different weight yarn or different tension), it is easy to continue with this pattern. Simply make sure you have a multiple of 9 sts easing any additional increases along the way of row 1.

Row 2: Ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in ea of next 3 dcs, Ch5, skip 1 st, 1dc in ea of next 4 dcs, *1dc in ea of next 4 dcs, ch5, skip 1 dc, 1dc in ea of next 4 dcs. Rep from * across, turn.

Row 3: Ch1, sc in same st, [(tr, ch2)x6, tr] in next ch5 sp, skip 4 dcs, slst in sp before next dc, skip 4 dcs, [(tr, ch2)x6, tr] in next ch5 sp. Rep from * across, sc in last st. Fasten off.

Finishing: Wash, block to finished measurements and allow to dry.
