This is an easy and relaxing crochet zen project featuring 5 simple stitch patterns. It would be just as pretty in a solid color as well as in the unlimited variations available to you when you combine up to 5 color stripes.

What you will need:
- 1420 yds (1300m) #3 dk weight yarn
or
284 yds (260m) ea of 5 colors #3 dk weight yarn - H/8 (5mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Shown in:
Be So Baby Yarn; 100% milk fiber, #3 dk weight yarn; 142 yds (130m) per 1.75 oz (50g) ball; shown in colors A Salmon, B Gold, C Turquoise, D Prince and E Indigo, 2 balls each.
Note: 4 balls each color for a rectangular shawl with 2 stripe repeats per color. 8 balls each color for a large afghan with 4 stripe repeats per color.
Note: Be So Baby Yarn is discontinued. Here are some suggested yarn substitutions for a suitable DK weight yarn:
Ice Yarns:
Cotton Bamboo Light Yarn: 60% bamboo / 40% cotton; 153 yds (140m) per 100 gm (3.5oz) ball. It comes in 29 colors. The suggested needle size is 3 – 4 mm (US 4 – US 6). I think the drape of this yarn would be comparable to Be So Baby Yarn. It is labeled a #3 DK weight yarn. This yarn retails for $2.25/ball or $8.99 per 4 balls.
Jimmy Beans Wools:
Sirdar Snuggly Baby Bamboo DK Yarn: #3 dk weight 80% bamboo / 20% wool; 104 yds per 50 gm ball; needle size US6. I think the drape and weight of this yarn would be comparable to Be So Baby Yarn. It comes in 13 colors retails for $6.75 per ball.
Knit Picks:
CotLin: #3 Dk weight 70% Tanguis Cotton, 30% Linen; 123 yds per 50gm skein; suggested needle size US 5 – 7. I think the drape and weight of this yarn would be comparable to Be So Baby Yarn. It comes in 44 colors and retails for $4.99 per skein.
Sirdar:
Sirdar Snuggly Baby Bamboo DK; #3 Dk weight 80% bamboo / 20% wool; 104 yds per 50gm ball; Suggested needle size US6. I think the drape and weight of this yarn would be comparable to Be So Baby Yarn. It comes in 12 colors and retails for $6.50 per ball.
Finished Size:
56 in (142.2cm) wide x 16 in (40.6cm) tall with 2 in (5cm) fringe on each side.
Gauge:
5 foundation ovals = 4 in (10cm) wide.
Stitch Guide:
Chain (ch), slip stitch (slst), half double crochet (hdc), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), treble crochet and 3 double crochet cluster (3dc-cl).
Instructions:
Set up row: With color A, *ch4, dc in 4th ch from hook. Rep from * 71 more times. — 72 foundation ovals
Row 1: Slst into first oval, ch5 (counts as tr, ch1), tr in same sp. *(Tr, ch1, tr) in next foundation oval. Rep from * across. — 72 V sts
Row 2: Ch2 (counts as hdc), hdc in ea ch and st across. — 216 hdcs
Row 3: Slst into next st, ch5 (counts as tr, ch1), tr in same st, *skip next 2 sts, (tr, ch1, tr) in next st. Rep from * across, leaving last st unworked. — 72 V sts
Row 4: Rep row 2.
Row 5: Rep row 3.
Row 6: Rep row 2. Fasten off color A.
Row 7: With color B, rep row 2.
Row 8: Ch1, sc in same st, *skip 2 sts, 5dc in next st, skip 2 sts, sc in next st. Rep from * across. Except on last repeat, replace skip 2sts with skip 1 st, then sc in top of beg ch2. —
Row 9: Ch3 (counts as dc), 2dc in same st, skip next dc, sc in next dc, *skip 2 dcs, 5dc in next sc, skip 2 dcs, sc in next dc. Rep from * across, skip 2 dcs, 3dc in last sc.
Rows 10 – 12: Rep rows 8 – 9 once, then row 8 once more.
Row 13: Ch3 (counts as dc), *hdc in next dc, 1sc in ea of next 3 dcs, hdc in next dc, dc in next sc. Rep from * across. Fasten off. — 217 sts
Row 14: With color C, rep row 2. — 217 sts
Row 15: Ch3 (counts as dc), *skip 2 sts, (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in next st, skip 2 sts, dc in next st. Rep from * across, except on last repeat replace last skip 2 sts with skip 1 st, then sc in top of beg ch2.
Row 16: Ch3 (counts as dc), (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in next ch1 sp, skip 3 dcs, dc in next dc. Rep from * across.
Rows 17 – 19: Rep row 15.
Row 20: Ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), sc in next ch1 sp, ch2, skip 3 dcs, dc in next dc, *ch2, sc in next ch1 sp, ch2, skip 3 dcs, dc in next dc. Rep from * across.
Row 21: Rep row 2. Fasten off. — 217 hdcs
Row 22: With color D, rep row 2.
Row 23: Ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), skip 2 sts, 3dc-cl in next st, *ch2, skip 2 sts, 3dc-cl in next st. Rep from * across, except on last repeat replace 3dc-cl with dc. — 70 clusters
Row 24: Ch3 (counts as dc), *(3dc-cl, ch3, 3dc-cl) in next cluster st, dc in next cluster st. Rep from * across, except on last repeat, work last dc in top ch of beg ch3.
Row 25: Ch1, sc in same st, *(ch1, dc, ch1, dc, ch1, dc, ch1) in next ch3 sp, sc in next dc. Rep from * across.
Row 26: Ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), skip next dc, sc in next dc, ch2, dc in next sc. *Ch2, skip next dc, sc in next dc, ch2, dc in next sc. Rep from * across.
Row 27: Ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), 3dc-cl in next sc, *ch2, 3dc-cl in next dc, ch2, 3dc-cl in next sc. Rep from * across, ch2, dc in 3rd ch of ch5.
Row 28: Rep row 2. Fasten off.
Row 29: With color E, rep row 2.
Row 30: Ch4 (counts as dc, ch1), dc in same st, 1dc in ea of next 6 dcs, *ch1, skip 1 st, 1dc in ea of next 7 sts. Rep from * across, ch1, dc in same st.
Row 31: Ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in ch1 sp, ch1, skip 1 dc, 1dc in ea of next 5 dcs, *ch1, skip 1 dc, dc in ch1 sp, ch1, skip 1 dc, 1dc in ea of next 5 dcs. Rep from * across, ch1, skip 1 dc, 1dc in ch1 sp, 1dc in top of ch3.
Row 32: Ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in next dc, 1dc in next ch1 sp, ch1, skip 1 dc, 1dc in ea of next 3 dcs, *ch1, skip 1dc, 1dc in next ch1 sp, 1dc in next dc, 1dc in next ch1 sp, ch1, skip 1 dc, 1dc in ea of next 3 dcs. Row 34: Ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in ea of next 3 dcs, 1dc in next ch1 sp, *ch1, skip 1 dc, 1dc in next ch1 sp, 1dc in ea of next 5 dcs, dc in next ch1 sp. Rep from * across, ch1, skip 1dc, 1dc in next ch1 sp, 1dc in ea of next 3 dcs, dc in top of ch3.
Row 35: Rep row 2. Fasten off.
Fringe Edging:
Note: Match the fringe edging yarn with the same color as worked in each respective stripe.
Working along row-ends, work 1sc in each row-end sc, work 2sc in ea row-end hdc, 2dc in ea row-end dc and 3sc in ea row-end tr st while at the same time, working the fringe edging repeat as follows: Slst to join in corner, ch1, sc in same st, *ch15, sc in 3rd ch from hook, ch12, sc in next st. Rep from * across. Fasten off after each color section is complete and repeat with respective colors across edge.
Finishing:
Weave in loose ends. Hand wash, block to finished measurements and allow to dry.
