How to Make a Crochet Half Circle Shawl with a Formula Pattern by Kristin Omdahl
A crochet half circle shawl is a wonderful shape for crochet shawls. This is the top down increase formula. It can be reversed for a bottom up construction as well. Use any weight yarn and make the crochet half circle shawl any size you want.

What you will need to make this Crochet Half Circle Shawl:
Note: A top down increase shawl can be made in any weight yarn with an appropriately sized crochet hook (check the yarn label for a suggested range).
This shawl is made with:
- Lion Brand Wool Ease, color Rainforest, 3 balls
- H/8 (5mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Gauge:
Gauge is not critical for this project. Here are some suggested size recommendations for top down shawls:
Suggested Shawl sizes:
Kerchief: 36 in (91cm) wide x 18 in (46cm) long
Shawlette: 24 in (61cm) – 30 in (76cm) wide x 48 in (122cm) to 60 in (152cm) wide
Full sized shawl: 36 in (91cm) – 40 in (102cm) long x 72 in (183cm) to 80 in (203cm) wide
Finished size:
50 in (127cm) wide x 20 in (50.8cm) long.
How to Make a Crochet Half Circle for Shawls Formula Pattern
Instructions to make Crochet Half Circle Shawl:
Set up row: *Ch3, dc in 3rd ch from hook. Rep from * two more times. — 3 foundation ovals
Row 1: Ch3 (counts as dc), 2dc in first foundation oval, 3dc in ea of next 2 foundation ovals. — 9 dcs
Row 2: Ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in same st, 2dc in ea st across, turn. — 18 dcs
Row 3: Ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in same st, 1dc in next st, *2dc in next st, 1dc in next st, rep from * across, turn. — 27 dcs
Row 4: Ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in same st, 1dc in ea of next 2 sts, *2dc in next st, 1dc in ea of next 2 sts, rep from * across, turn. — 36 dcs
Row 5: Ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in same st, 1dc in ea of next 3 sts, *2dc in next st, 1dc in ea of next 3 sts, rep from * across, turn. — 45 dcs
Row 6: Ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in same st, 1dc in ea of next 4 sts, *2dc in next st, 1dc in ea of next 3 sts, rep from * across, turn. — 54 dcs
Continue in established pattern for desired size. Add any edging that works for the stitch count and multiple of the last row worked, or adjust your stitch count with a few increases or decreases on last row to fit the multiple of your desired edging.

Note: Each additional row increases the stitch count by 9 sts.
Finishing:
Weave in loose ends. Hand wash, block to finished measurements and allow to dry.

Kristin, for those of us who rely on diagrams for our crochet projects, you have made it difficult for us to read the diagram you provided by putting your name over it. I understand why you do it but I felt you should know it is difficult to read that diagram now.
