This is a gorgeous stitch pattern worked up into two strips and joined together to create a cardigan style top. The waist band, triangular motif, and ties all add to the infinite styling options.

What you will need:

  • 650 yds (594.3m) #3 dk weight yarn
    or
    1160 yds (1060m) #5 bulky weight yarn
  • G/6 (4mm) crochet hook
    or
    M/13 (9mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Note: I ended up making 2 samples of this pattern: one is Be So Baby Yarn and one in Be So Easy Yarn. The pattern is written for the Be So Baby Version but the instructions are identical for both samples, minus the lower body band and side seams. The Be So Easy version is worn open as a flowy ruana.

Be So Baby Yarn; 142 yds (130m) per 1.75 oz (50gm); 100% milk fiber, #3 dk weight yarn; color Tutu, 5 balls.

Be So Easy Yarn; 145 yds (132m) per 3.5oz (100g); 100% milk cotton fiber, #5 bulky weight yarn; color Lavender, 8 balls.

Finished Size:

This is an oversized vest that can be styled loose and open or cinched closed with the corset ties and belt to fit a variety of sizes.

Each side panel is 22 in (55.9cm) wide x 15 in (38.1cm) long before assembly in the Be So Baby version.

To increase the length of this project, each multiple of 30 stitch stitch pattern will add 8 in (20.3cm) to the length of each panel (folded in half at shoulder line will yield an overall length increase of 4 in (10cm) per pattern repeat addition.

To increase the width of this project, each 6-row repeat of the pattern will add 5 in (7.6cm) to the width of each panel.

Gauge:

13 sts / 8 rows = 4 in (10cm) in blocked double crochet.

Stitch Guide:

Chain (ch), slip stitch (slst), single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), treble crochet 2 together (tr2tog), treble crochet (tr), treble crochet 3 together (tr3tog), foundation double crochet (fdc), and 3 treble crochet cluster (3tr-cl).

Instructions:

Left and Right Vest Panels (make 2):

Set up row: Fdc 153.

Row 1: Ch1, sc in first st, *sc in next st, (ch4, skip 4 sts, sc in next st)x2, skip 4 sts, (ch1, tr)x6 in next st, ch1, skip 4 sts, sc in next st, (ch4, sc in next st)x2. Rep from * across, sc in last st. — 5 shells

Row 2: Ch1, 1 sc in ea of first 2 sts *ch4, sc in next sc, (ch2, tr in next tr)x2, [(ch2, tr)x2 in next tr]x2, (ch2, tr in next tr)x2, ch2, sc in next sc, ch4, sc in next sc. Rep from * across, sc in last sc. — 5 shells

Row 3: Ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), sc in first st, *(ch3, 3tr-cl in next tr)x8, ch3, skip next sc, (sc, ch5, sc) in next sc. Rep from * across, except on last repeat replace last (ch5, sc) with ch2, dc in last st. — 5 shells

Row 4: Ch4, tr2tog over first st and second ch3 sp, *(ch4, dc in next ch3 sp)x5, ch4, tr3tog over next ch3, skip  next ch3, ch5, skip next ch3, ch3 sps. Rep from * across. On last repeat work last tr3tog over the second to last ch3 sp and 2 legs in the last ch5 sps. 

Row 5: Ch3 (counts as dc), dc in next ch4 sp, *ch2, hdc in same ch4 sp, hdc in next dc, hdc in next ch4 sp, (ch2, sc in same ch4 sp, sc in next dc, sc in next ch4 sp)x3, ch2, hdc in same ch4 sp, hdc in next dc, hdc in next ch4 sp, ch2, dc in same ch4 sp, dc in next tr3tog st, dc in next ch4 sp. Rep from * across, except omit last dc on last repeat.

Row 6: Ch4 (counts as tr), tr in next dc, *ch2, tr in ea of next 3 hdcs, ch2, (tr in ea of next 3 scs)x3, ch2, tr in ea of next 3 hdcs, ch2, tr in ea of next 3 dcs. Rep from * across, except omit last dc on last repeat.

Rows 7 – 18: Rep rows 1 – 6 two more times. Fasten off.

Assemby of Vest:

Sew vest panels together through 1.5 pattern repeats (see diagram).

Shoulder Shaping Triangular Motif:

Row 1: Join yarn with slst to top of vest seam. Ch3 (counts as dc), skip next 2 sts on right side panel, slst in next st, work 4dc in seam, skip next 2 sts on left side panel, slst in next st.

Row 2: Ch3 (counts as dc),skip next 2 sts on left side panel, slst in next st, work 1dc in same st, 1dc in ea of next 3 sts, 2dc in last st, skip next 2 sts on right side panel, slst in next st. — 7 sts

Row 3: Ch3 (counts as dc),  skip next 2 sts on right side panel, slst in next st, 1dc in ea st across, skip 2 sts on left side panel, slst in next st. — 7 sts

Row 4: Ch3 (counts as dc),skip next 2 sts on left side panel, slst in next st, work 1dc in same st, 1dc in ea of next 5 sts, 2dc in last st, skip next 2 sts on right side panel, slst in next st. — 9 sts

Row 5: Ch3 (counts as dc),  skip next 2 sts on right side panel, slst in next st, 1dc in ea st across, skip 2 sts on left side panel, slst in next st. — 9 sts

Row 6: Ch3 (counts as dc),skip next 2 sts on left side panel, slst in next st, work 1dc in same st, 1dc in ea of next 7 sts, 2dc in last st, skip next 2 sts on right side panel, slst in next st. — 11 sts

Row 7: Ch3 (counts as dc),  skip next 2 sts on right side panel, slst in next st, 1dc in ea st across, skip 2 sts on left side panel, slst in next st. — 11 sts

Row 8: Ch3 (counts as dc),skip next 2 sts on left side panel, slst in next st, work 1dc in same st, 1dc in ea of next 9 sts, 2dc in last st, skip next 2 sts on right side panel, slst in next st. — 13 sts

Row 9: Ch3 (counts as dc),  skip next 2 sts on right side panel, slst in next st, 1dc in ea st across, skip 2 sts on left side panel, slst in next st. Fasten off. — 11 sts

Sleeve Seam:

With body folded in half from front to back, sew 1 pattern repeat of sleeve seam together from the lower edge.

Lower Body Band: 

Row 1: Join with slst to either side of front lower edge, and working across row-end sts, ch3 (counts as dc), work 1dc in ea sc row-end st, 2dc in ea dc row-end st, and 3dc in ea tr row-end st across. — 152 sts

Rows 2 – 5: Ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in ea st across. Fasten off.

Belt:

Row 1: Ch4, 3dc in 4th ch from hook. 

Row 2: Slst into space between 2nd and 3rd sts of prev row, ch3 (counts as dc), 3dc in same sp.

Rep row 2 until belt is twice the length of waist circumference, or to you style preference. After last row, slst into space between 2nd and 3rd sts of prev row before fastening off.

Corset Tie for front closure):

Make a chain 25 in (63.5)cm long. Fasten off. Tie a knot in each end of chain.

Finishing:

Weave in loose ends. Hand wash, block to finished measurements and allow to dry.
