Riley Vertical Striped Cowl Crochet Free Pattern Page by Kristin Omdahl
This is a visually stunning adaptation of the simple crochet shell. Each round is worked in one color at a time and yet the cowl is magically vertically striped. Tripling the yarn makes the cowl extra squishy and cozy and it whips up lightening fast, too! The ad-free PDF download pattern includes chart, stitch glossary and symbol library. 100% of the Proceeds of this pattern are donated through my charity Project Kristin Cares to survivors of domestic violence. What you will need:
- 568 yds (519.4m) #3 dk weight yarn, held tripled
- N/15 (10mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Shown in:
Be So Baby Yarn; 142 yds (130m) per 1.75 oz (50g); 100% milk (casein) fiber; colors Eggplant 3 balls and Violet 3 balls.
Note: If chain plying you can make this cowl with 2 balls each of the 2 colors.
Note: Be So Baby Yarn is discontinued. Here are some suggested yarn substitutions for a suitable DK weight yarn:
Ice Yarns:
Cotton Bamboo Light Yarn: 60% bamboo / 40% cotton; 153 yds (140m) per 100 gm (3.5oz) ball. It comes in 29 colors. The suggested needle size is 3 – 4 mm (US 4 – US 6). I think the drape of this yarn would be comparable to Be So Baby Yarn. It is labeled a #3 DK weight yarn. This yarn retails for $2.25/ball or $8.99 per 4 balls.
Jimmy Beans Wools:
Sirdar Snuggly Baby Bamboo DK Yarn: #3 dk weight 80% bamboo / 20% wool; 104 yds per 50 gm ball; needle size US6. I think the drape and weight of this yarn would be comparable to Be So Baby Yarn. It comes in 13 colors retails for $6.75 per ball.
Knit Picks:
CotLin: #3 Dk weight 70% Tanguis Cotton, 30% Linen; 123 yds per 50gm skein; suggested needle size US 5 – 7. I think the drape and weight of this yarn would be comparable to Be So Baby Yarn. It comes in 44 colors and retails for $4.99 per skein.
Sirdar:
Sirdar Snuggly Baby Bamboo DK; #3 Dk weight 80% bamboo / 20% wool; 104 yds per 50gm ball; Suggested needle size US6. I think the drape and weight of this yarn would be comparable to Be So Baby Yarn. It comes in 12 colors and retails for $6.50 per ball.
Finished Size:
25 in (63.4cm) circumference x 11 in (28cm) tall.
Gauge:
Each shell is 2 in (5cm) wide x 1 in (2.5cm) tall after blocking. Gauge is not critical for this project.
Stitch Guide:
See glossary for chain (ch), double crochet (dc), foundation oval (fo), single crochet (sc) and slip stitch (slst).
Instructions:
Note: Yarn is tripled throughout entire project.
Round 1: With color A, *Ch3, dc in 3rd ch from hook. Rep from * 13 more times, slst to first ch at beg of round to join. — 14 foundation ovals
Round 2: Slst into first foundation oval, ch3 (counts as dc), (1dc, ch1, 2dc) in same sp, ch3, skip 1 foundation oval, *(2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next foundation oval, ch3, skip next foundation oval. Rep from * across, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 7 shells
Elongate the loop from the last stitch and set to the front of work, leaving the working yarn to the back of the work. This will be used every other round, so elongating the loop will protect it from unraveling as you work the second color. Do not fasten off.
Round 3: Join color B with a slst to the first skipped foundation oval (the 2nd oval made), ch3 (counts as dc), (1dc, ch1, 2dc) in same sp, ch3, skip shell on prev round, *work (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next foundation oval skipped, working around the ch3 sp from prev round (sandwiching it inside your stitches), ch3, skip shell on prev round. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 7 shells
Elongate the loop from the last stitch and set to the front of work, leaving the working yarn to the back of the work. This will be used every other round, so elongating the loop will protect it from unraveling as you work the alternate color. Do not fasten off.
