This is a cheerful and fun bag that is a great exploration in colorwork. Choose 5 colors of yarn and mix and match them among the 4 different motifs. What you will need:

• • 710 yds (649.2m) #3 dk weight yarn
• • G/7 (4.5mm) crochet hook
• • Yarn needle
• • Scissors

Each motif is 4 in (10cm) square.

Finished Size:

Bag is 12 in (30.5cm) wide x 13 in (33cm) tall, 7 in (17.8cm) bag drop for handle.

Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), single crochet (sc), single crochet through back loop only (scblo), double crochet through back loop only (dc-blo), slip stitch (slst), 2 double crochet cluster (2dc-cl), 3 double crochet cluster (3dc-cl), 4 double crochet cluster (4dccl), 5 double crochet cluster (5dc-cl), 4 double crochet popcorn, 5 double crochet popcorn and chain 5 join (ch5 join).

Instructions:

Note: Choose different color combinations for the 18 motifs. If you want your colors evenly used over the entire bag (like the finished sample bag), use all colors equally but limit color E to only the first two rounds of any motif.

Motif A (make 5):

Ch5, slst to 5th ch from hook to form ring.

Round 1: Ch1, 8sc in ring. Slst to top of first st at beg of round to join.

Round 2: Ch3 (counts as dc), 4dc popcorn in first sc, (ch3, 5dc popcorn in next sc)x7, ch3, slst to top of first st at beg of round to join. — 8 ch3 sps Fasten off.

Round 3: With new color of yarn, slst to any ch3 sp, ch3 (counts as dc), 4dc in same sp, *5dc in next ch3 sp. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 40 dcs Fasten off.

Round 4: With new color of yarn, join with slst to any sp between 5dc sections, ch1, sc in same sp, *ch5, skip 5 dcs, sc in sp before next dc, 2dc in ea of next 2 dcs, (dc, ch5, dc) in next dc, 2dc in ea of next 2 dcs, sc in sp before next dc. Rep from * around, replace last sc with slst to top of first st at beg of round to join. Fasten off.

Motif B (make 5):

Ch5, slst to 5th ch from hook to form ring.

Round 1: Ch1, 12 sc in ring, slst to top of first st at beg of round to join. — 12 scs

Round 2: Ch3 (counts as dc), 2dc-cl in same st, *ch2, 3dc-cl in next sc. Rep from * around, ch2, slst to top of first st at beg of round to join. — 12 ch2 sps Fasten off.

Round 3: With new color of yarn, join with slst to any ch2 sp, ch3 (counts as dc), 2dc-cl in same sp, *ch3, 3dc-cl in next ch2 sp. Rep from * around, ch3, slst to top of first st at beg of round to join. — 12 ch3 sps Fasten off.

Round 4: With new color of yarn, join with slst to any ch3 sp, ch1, sc in same sp, *ch5, sc in next ch3 sp, (5dc, ch5, 5dc) in next ch3 sp, sc in next ch3 sp. Rep from * around, replace last sc with slst to top of first st at beg of round to join. Fasten off.

Motif C (make 4):

Ch5, slst to 5th ch from hook to form ring.

Round 1: Ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), (dc in ring, ch2)x11, slst to 3rd ch of beg ch5 to join. — 12 ch2 sps Fasten off.

Round 2: With new color of yarn, join with slst to any ch2 sp, ch3 (counts as dc), 4dc-cl in same sp, (ch3, 5dc-cl in next ch3 sp)x11, slst to top of first st at beg of round to join. — 12 ch3 sps Fasten off.

Round 3: With new color of yarn, join with slst to any ch3 sp, ch1, sc in same sp, *ch5, sc in next ch3 sp, (5dc, ch5, 5dc) in next ch3 sp, sc in next ch3 sp. Rep from * around, replace last sc with slst to first st at beg of round to join. Fasten off.

Motif D (make 4):

Ch5, slst to 5th ch from hook to form ring.

Round 1: Ch3 (counts a dc), 15 dc in ring, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 16 dcs Fasten off.

Round 2: With new color of yarn, join with slst to any st, ch1, sc in same st, *5dc in next st, 1sc in next st. Rep from * around, except replace last sc with slst to top of first st at beg of round to join. — 8 scs, 40 dcs Fasten off.

Round 3: With new color of yarn, join with slst through back loop only of any center dc in any 5dc section, ch1, sc-blo in same st, *ch5, skip 5 sts, sc-blo in next dc, 2dc-blo in ea of next 2 dcs, (dc-blo, ch5, dc-blo) in next sc, 2dc-blo in ea of next 2 dcs, sc-blo in next dc. Rep from * around, except on last repeat, replace last scblo with slst to first st at beg of round to join. Fasten off.

Joining Motifs:

Note: The last round of every motif is identical.

Last Round of First Motif:

Last Round: With color E, join with slst to any side ch5 sp, ch1, sc in same sp, *ch5, skip 2 dcs, sc in next dc, ch5, (sc, ch5, sc) in next ch5 sp, ch5, skip 2 dcs, sc in next dc, ch5, sc in next ch5 sp. Rep from * around, except on last repeat, replace sc with slst to first st at beg of round to join.

Last Round of Second Motif:

Last Round: Repeat last round of first motif, except join to first motif at any corner replacing (sc, ch5, sc) with (sc, ch5 join, sc) in corner.

Last Round of Remaining Motifs:

Note: Refer to schematic for placement of each joined motif. After first two motifs, all remaining motifs are joined on two sides replacing ch5 sps with ch5 joins along joining sides and joining in center of 5dc sections with slst to 3rd of 5 dcs.

Last Round: With color E, join with slst to any side ch5 sp, ch1, sc in same sp, *ch5, skip 2 dcs, sc in next dc, ch5, (sc, ch5, sc) in next ch5 sp, ch5, skip 2 dcs, sc in next dc, ch5, sc in next ch5 sp. Rep from * around, except on last repeat, replace last sc with slst to top of sc at beg of round to join.

Top Band:

Round 1: With color E, join with slst to any ch5 sp corner at top of motif 15, 16, 17 or 18. Ch3 (counts as dc), (1dc, ch3, 2dc) in same sp, work 3dc in ea of next 4 ch5 sps, skip the corner join between motifs, *work 3dc in ea of next 4 ch5 sps, (2dc ch3, 2dc) in next ch5 corner sp, work 3dc in ea of next 4 ch5 sps, skip the corner join between motifs. Rep from * around, work 3dc in ea of the last 4 ch5 sps, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. Fasten off.

Straps (make 2):

Round 1: With color E, join yarn in any ch3 corner on front of bag, ch40, slst to other ch3 corner on front of bag.

Round 2: Turn, sc in ea of the 40 chs, slst in ch3 sp. Round 3: Turn, sc in ea of the 40 scs, slst in ch3 sp. Round 4: Turn, slst in ea of the 40 scs and ch3 sp. Fasten off.

Repeat rounds 1 – 4 for back strap. Fasten off.

Finishing: Weave in ends. Hand wash, block to finished measurements and allow to dry.
