It is a well known fact that gratitude journaling and other types of journaling are great for you. There are many benefits to keeping a journal, but those benefits increase when you factor gratitude into the practice of journaling. Cultivating gratitude focuses the mind more on what we have than what we don’t have. Gratitude improves self-esteem, mental health and physical health. It costs nothing, takes minimal time, yet the benefits are enormous.

There are many things to be grateful for, beyond receiving a gift or compliment. It may seem impossible to think of things to be grateful for, but here are a few tips to get you started on your journey in gratitude journaling. You may be surprised but once you get rolling, it gets easier and easier to find and feel things that fill you with gratitude.

  1. Did someone slow down to let you merge into traffic today?

  2. Did you have to leave for work earlier than usual but get to witness a beautiful sunrise?

  3. Did the flu/cold pass around the office but miss you?

  4. Did you drop a plate on the floor and it did not break?

  5. Did you worry about being late to something and somehow still arrive on time?

  6. Did you have a random conversation with a stranger that brightened your day?

  7. Did you find something on sale at the store exactly when you were looking for that item?

It is helpful to create a routine to get started. Good habits begin with getting started, then staying consistent.

  1. Set aside a time that you think you can commit to daily. Is it right when you wake up? As you’re enjoying your first coffee? Or maybe it is as you are settling down for bed? Maybe it is on your lunch hour?

  2. Set a place. Find a place you feel comfortable and think you will be able to concentrate. Outdoors in nature? In a quiet spot at home? Maybe even in your parked car.

  3. Set a limit. Eventually you may find unlimited things to be thankful for, but start out small and list one thing you are grateful for each day of the month. Or maybe write out three things you are grateful for this week or this month. Then as you become more comfortable with the practice, let your gratitude habit grow.

Some common gratitude journaling idea prompts:

Use these as a starting point. Maybe the words are sufficient some days and maybe other days you will want to describe your gratitude more fully.
