Follow the step by step instructions plus charts to make a matching baby hat and cocoon set. And, convert any hat or circular motif pattern into a baby hat or cocoon with the handy sizing chart below!

What you will need:
315 yards sport weight yarn
1 ball Be So Serene Yarn; 100% organic cotton; shown in color Tranquil
E/4 (3.5mm) crochet hook
Yarn needle
Scissors

#2 Sport Weight Yarn

Be So Sporty Yarn

Gauge: 4 sts / 2 rows = 1″ in double crochet

Finished size:
Hat: 12″ circumference, 5″ tall
Cocoon: 18″ circumference, 18″ tall

Baby Cocoon Size Chart
XXS: 14″ long x 12″ circumference, up to 3 lb baby
XS: 16″ long x 16″ circumference, 3 – 5 lb baby
S: 18″ long x 20″ circumference, 6 – 8 lb baby
M: 20″ long x 20″ circumference, 9 – 11 lb baby
L: 23″long x 24″ circumference, 12 – 15 lb baby
XL: 25″ long x 24″ circumference, 15 – 17 lb baby

Baby Hat Size Chart
Preemie: 10″ circumference x 4″ long
Newborn: 12″ circumference x 5″ long
3 – 6 months: 14″ circumference x 5.5″ long
6 – 12 months: 16″ circumference x 6.5″ long
1 – 3 Years (toddler): 17″ circumference x 7″ long
3 – 10 Years: 18″ circumference x 7.5″ long
Teen / Adult Small: 20″ circumference x 7.5″ long
Adult Large / Mens: 22″ x 8″ long
Slouchy Hat: make for your size but add 3″

NOTE: here is a side by side comparison with the circumference and diameter of all of the sizes listed above. If you are working on any circular motif, the diameter across times 3.14 (pi) will give you the circumference of the circle.
10″ circumference:  = 3.25″ diameter
12″ circumference = 3.75″ diameter
14″ circumference = 4.5″ diameter
16″ circumference = 5″ diameter
17″ circumference = 5.5″ diameter
18″ circumference = 5.75″ diameter
20″ circumference = 6.25″ diameter
22″ circumference = 7″ diameter
24″ circumference = 7.75″ diameter

Instructions:
Hat:

Round 1: ch4, 11dc in 4th ch from hook, slst to top of 4th ch at beg of round to join. — 12 dcs

Round 2: ch3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, 2dc in ea st around. Slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 24 dcs

Round 3: Ch3 (counts as dc), 1dc in next st, *ch2, 1dc in ea of next 2 sts. Rep from * around, ch1, sc in top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 12 ch2 sps

NOTE: (ch1, sc) at end of round 3 counts as the equivalent of a ch2 sp but places you at the top center of the ch2 sp for beginning the next round.

Round 4: ch3 (counts as dc), (dc, ch2, 2dc) in same ch2 sp, *(2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next ch2 sp. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 12 ch2 sps

Round 5: slst in next dc and in next ch2 sp, ch3 (counts as dc), (dc, ch2, 2dc) in same ch2 sp. *(2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next ch2 sp. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 12 ch2 sps

Rounds 6 – 10: rep round 5.

Fasten off. Weave in loose ends.

Cocoon:
Rounds 1 – 5: rep rounds 1 – 5 of hat.

Round 6: slst in next dc and in next ch2 sp, ch3 (counts as dc), (2dc, ch2, 3dc) in same ch2 sp.  *(3dc, ch2, 3dc) in next ch2 sp. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 12 ch2 sps

Round 7: slst in ea of next 2 dcs and next ch2 sp, ch3 (counts as dc), (2dc, ch2, 3dc) in same ch2 sp. *(3dc, ch2, 3dc) in next ch2 sp. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch3 at beg of round to join. — 12 ch2 sis

NOTE: round 7 is the end of the increases for the 18″ circumference cocoon because the diameter of round 7 is 5.75″.

Rounds 8 – 28: rep round 7.

Fasten off. Weave in loose ends. Hand wash, block to finished measurements and let dry.
