Layers are a wonderful way to express your style in a multitude of ways simultaneously. I love to add textures, colors and prints to my outfits through layers. A simple blouse or tshirt can be dressed up with a loose crochet vest and jewelry in contrasting or monochromatic colors. For example, this easy and beautiful vest could be worn in contrast to the shirt underneath to make the texture of the stitchwork pop. Or, worn over a monochromatic tshirt, its the texture of the yarn that pops.
This could be worn over jeans or capris OR a sundress or maxi dress. There really isn’t a wrong way to wear a vest!

What you will need to make the Claire Crochet Vest:
- 600 yds #4 worsted weight yarn
- H/8 (5mm) crochet hook
- yarn needle for weaving in loose ends
Abbreviations
beg – begin(ning)
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
inc – increase
pat – pattern
rep – repeat
rnd – round
RS – right side
sc – single crochet
sk – skip
sl st – slip stitch
sp – space
st – stitch
tr – triple crochet
WS – wrong side

Gauge: ea repeat is 4″ wide x 2″ tall
Finished size: Back of vest is 20″ long, entire vest is 46″ wide, Front of vest is 28″ wide, armholes are 8″ long and 1″ wideVest is worked from center back outward in ea direction.
Instructions for Crochet Vest:
First side:
Set up row: *ch4, tr in 4th ch from hook. Rep from * 14 more times. — 15 foundation ovalsRow 1 (WS): Ch 5, sc in first sp, * 7 dc in next sp, sc in next sp, ch 5, sc in next sp; rep from * to last 2 sps, 7 dc in next sp, sc in next sp, ch 2, dc in edge st of foundation. — 5 pattern repeats
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first dc, * (dc, ch 1) in each of next 6 dc, dc in next dc, sc in next ch-5 sp; rep from * to end. — 5 pattern repeats
Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), * ch 5, sk next ch-1 sp, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 5, sk 2 ch-1 sps, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 5, dc in next sc, rep from * to end. — 5 pattern repeats
Row 4: Ch 5, sc in first sp, * 7 dc in next sp, sc in next sp, ch 5, sc in next sp; rep from * to last 2 sps, 7 dc in next sp, sc in next sp, ch 2, dc in 3rd of beg ch-3 of previous row. — 5 pattern repeats
Row 5: Rep Row 2.
Rows 6 – 14: rep rows 3 – 5 three more times.
Row 15: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), * ch 5, sk next ch-1 sp, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 5, sk 2 ch-1 sps, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 5, dc in next sc*, (ch4, tr in 4th ch from hook)x6, skip 2 repeats on row 14, dc in next sc. Rep from * to * two more times. — 3 pattern repeats and 6 foundation ovals.
Armhole is complete.
Row 16: Ch 5, sc in first sp, * 7 dc in next sp, sc in next sp, ch 5, sc in next sp*. Rep from * to * one more time. (7 dc in next oval, sc in next oval, ch 5, sc in next oval)x2. Rep from * to * once more. — 5 pattern repeats.
Row 17: rep row 2
Row 18: rep row 3
Row 19: Ch 5, 7dc in first ch5 sp, ch5, * 7 dc in next sp, sc in next sp, ch 5, sc in next sp; rep from * to last ch 5 sp, ch5, 7 dc in last ch5 sp, ch2, dc in 3rd of beg ch-3 of previous row. — 7 pattern repeats.
Row 20: rep row 2
Rows 21 – 38: rep rows 3 – 5 five more times. — 7 pattern repeats.
Row 39: rep row 3. Fasten off.
Second side:
NOTE: instead of making the foundation ovals, we will work the second side of the vest into the opposite side of the original foundation ovals.
Rows 1 – 14: rep rows 1 – 14 of first side.
Row 15: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), * ch 5, sk next ch-1 sp, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 5, sk 2 ch-1 sps, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 5, dc in next sc*. Rep from * to * once more. (ch4, tr in 4th ch from hook)x6, skip 2 repeats on row 14, dc in next sc. Rep from * to * one more times. — 3 pattern repeats and 6 foundation ovals.
Armhole is complete.
Row 16: Ch 5, sc in first sp, * 7 dc in next sp, sc in next sp, ch 5, sc in next sp*. (7 dc in next oval, sc in next oval, ch 5, sc in next oval)x2. Rep from * to * two more times. — 5 pattern repeats.
Rows 17 – 39: rep rows 17 – 39 of first side. Fasten off.
Weave in loose ends. Hand wash, block to finished measurements and let dry.
NOTE: This is a relatively simple project to size up for larger sizes. If you want the wrap longer, simply increase the number of foundation ovals at the beginning of the project in a multiple of 3. To increase the width of the wrap, simple work more rows of the stitch pattern. To increase the length of the armhole openings, for every pattern repeat you skip make sure you increase the foundation ovals on the next row accordingly (for every pattern repeat added, add a multiple of 3 foundation ovals

what would i do if i wanted the pattern longer at the back

I would suggest starting with 7 pattern repeats instead of 5. 7×3 = 21 foundation ovals. You will need one additional ball of yarn for this modification.

Can u post a photo of rounds 15 and 16? I must have done the armhole wrong. I am getting 7 repeats instead of 5. I am probably doing the ovals wrong or skipping the wrong areas of repeat. That would help a lot.

Hi how could I make this big enough for 60" chest. I love this so pretty. Tq in advance
Not sure which way you want it sized differently. But, I can tell you that some ladies have adjusted the size by working more foundation ovals in the beginning of the project to make it longer in the back. If you are asking to make it wider, you would need to add more rows before and after the armhole opening.

what size is this? i am a size Small (bust size is 34in.). how will i start the foundation oval if i will make it in my size using DK cotton yarn and what crochet hook size? thanks! i’d really like to do this for myself! 🙂
This is an unsized, unconstructed vest. Did you see the flat dimensions given?
Without knowing your gauge with a different yarn and different hook size, I am not able to help you determine what size your vest would be. I would need more information to help you.
