Lacy Cake Amethyst Geode Crochet Shawl FREE Pattern
By Kristin Omdahl
This is one of the easiest crochet shawls you will ever choose to make. It takes only ONE Lacy Cake and you don’t even have to switch color. Lacy Cakes are a self-striping yarn with 5 hand dyed colors of Be So Fine Yarn, 100% bamboo, fingering weight yarn.
The pattern is a ONE ROW REPEAT! The drama is in the self-striping color changes and the super simple last row which simply cinches the edges for a dramatic scalloped border.
Watch the videos at the bottom of this free pattern page to learn the shawl stitch pattern, the cleverly constructed and EASY edging and also to learn how to block this beautiful crochet shawl.
What you will need:
(1) LACY CAKE of Be So Fine Yarn; 100% bamboo, fingering weight yarn; 650 yards per 4oz; colorway Amethyst Geode
G/6 (4mm) crochet hook
#1 Fingering Weight Yarn
Gauge:
Finished size: 54″ wide x 27″ tall
Instructions:
SHAWL
Row 1: ch5, (dc, ch2)x4 in 5th ch from hook, dc in same ch. — 5 ch2 sps
Row 2: ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), (dc, ch2, dc) in first ch2 sp, (dc, ch2, dc) in next ch2 sp, (dc, ch2, dc, ch2, dc, ch2, dc) in next ch2 sp, (dc, ch2, dc) in next ch2 sp, (dc, ch2, dc, ch2, dc) in last ch2 sp. — 9 ch2 sps
NOTE: each row from 3 to 32 is a repeat of row 2, except you are increasing by 4 ch2 sps (2 ch2 sps on ea side of center). Some crocheters will be able to memorize the pattern after only a few repeated rows. But I want you to feel comfortable trying this pattern, even if you are a beginner. So I have written out ALL the rows, with stitch counts! The edging row begins on row 33.
Row 3: ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), (dc, ch2, dc) in first ch2 sp, (dc, ch2, dc) in ea of next 3 ch2 sps, (dc, ch2, dc, ch2, dc, ch2, dc) in next ch2 sp, (dc, ch2, dc) in ea of next 3 ch2 sps, (dc, ch2, dc, ch2, dc) in last ch2 sp. — 13 ch2 sps

Thanks for the request! Yes, it is certainly doable 🙂 I’m working on it and much more!

Thank you so very much for taking time out to write out all the information on the increase rows as a beginner to making shawls Kristin this is fabulous. A video on just the first row, to make sure I am interpretting your instructions exactly would be perfect.
May I please enquire if it would be possible for you to make a video on the types of yarns you use? By that I mean the ply or weight of individual yarns. I reside in the UK and we dont have the option of using sporty, fingerling, or worsted yarns. I have googled this info so many times before and each website tells me something different. In the UK we have double knitting, 4 ply, chunky and super chunky, which of these plys would I use for the shawl? Yes something very fine, but what are the fibres of your yarns? I have looked up bamboo but it cannot be sourced in England, the only Bamboo yarn I can find is a brand name. Do you have an agent in England who imports your yarns now or in the future? As shipping charges between our great countries are extortionately expensive. I hope I have given you some inspiration for the future, as you have also inspired me to progress further in my hobby of crochet. All good wishes for the future Kirstin.
Hi Linda Anne,
Thanks for your questions! Great idea 🙂 I will work on it for a future blog post and video. And, I would LOVE to figure out a way to make international shipping more affordable! I’m still thinking on it…

I can not print this pattern, there is no green "Print Friendly" button to print this pattern. There are also other pattern’s with the same issue! Thanks, will love to try and make! Debra cook, a fan!
Thanks for letting me know, Debra! This pattern has the green print friendly button now. If you wouldn’t mind letting me know of any others, that would be great! I have hundreds of free patterns 🙂

I am trying this pattern with a cheap yarn first. What does the ps mean in the pattern?
example: in next ch2 ps
Row 3: ch5 (counts as dc, ch2), (dc, ch2, dc) in first ch2 sp, (dc, ch2, dc) in ea of next 3 ch2 sps, (dc, ch2, dc, ch2,dc, ch2, dc) in next ch2 ps, (dc, ch2, dc) in ea of next 3 ch2 sps, (dc, ch2, dc, ch2, dc) in last ch2 sp. — 13 ch2 sps
It is a super-imposed typo of sp (abbreviation of space).
Thank you for letting me know!! All fixed now.
