Slouchy Crochet Hat FREE Pattern by Kristin Omdahl

Materials:

1 hank Be So Sporty Yarn
F/5 (3.75mm) crochet hook
US5 (3.75mm) 16” circular knitting needle

Gauge: 4.5 sts/2.5 rows = 1” in single and treble crochet pattern

Finished size:
20” circumference, 10” tall

Instructions:

With crochet hook, ch5, slst to beg of chain to join in a round.

Round 1: ch1, 10sc in ring, slst to first st at beg of round to join.

Round 2: ch4 (counts as tr), tr in same st, *2tr in next st. Rep from * around, join with slst to top of ch4 at beg of round to join. — 20 sts

Round 3: ch1, 2sc in first st, 1sc in next st. *2sc in next st, 1sc in next st. Rep from * around, join with slst to top of first st at beg of round. — 30 sts

Round 4: ch4 (counts as tr), tr in same st. 1tr in ea of next 2 sts. *2tr in next st, 1tr in ea of next 2 sts. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch4 at beg of round to join. — 40 sts

Round 5: ch1, 2sc in first st, 1sc in ea of next 3 sts. *2sc in next st, 1sc in ea of next 3 sts. Rep from * around, slst to first st at beg of round to join. — 50 sts

Round 6: ch4, (counts as tr), tr in same st. 1tr in ea of next 4 sts. *2tr in next st. 1tr in ea of next 4 sts. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch5 at beg of round to join. — 60 sts

Round 7: ch1, 2sc in first st. 1sc in ea of next 5 sts. *2sc in next st, 1sc in ea of next 5 sts. Rep from * around, slst to top of first st at beg of round to join. — 70 sts

Round 8: ch4 (counts as tr), tr in same st. 1tr in ea of next 6 sts. *2tr in next st, 1tr in ea of next 6 sts. Rep from * around, slst to top of ch4 at beg of round to join. — 80 sts

Round 9: ch1, 2sc in first st, 1sc in ea of next 7 sts. *2sc in next st, 1sc in ea of next 7 sts. Rep from * around, slst to first st at beg of round to join. — 90 sts

NOTE: at this point, crown increases are complete.

Round 10: ch4 (counts as tr), work 1tr in ea st around, slst to top of ch4 at beg of round to join. — 90 sts

Round 11: ch1, sc in ea st around, slst to first st at beg of round to join. — 90 sts

Rounds 12 – 25: rep rounds 10 – 11 seven more times

NOTE: at this point, remaining hat is worked on circular knitting needles, picking up sts from round 25. For an ALL CROCHET VERSION, jump to the end below.

Round 26: insert loop from hook onto knitting needle (counts as first st), pick up and knit into ea of next 7 sts, *skip next st, pick up and knit into ea of the next 8 sts. Rep from * around, skip last st. — 80 sts

Round 27: *k2, p2. Rep from * around. — 80 sts

Rounds 28 – 39: rep round 27.

 

Bind off loosely as follows: k1, yo, k1. Pass first st and yo together over second st. (yo, p1, Pass first st and yo together over second st)x2, (yo, k1, pass first st and yo together over second st)x2, (yo, p1, pass first st and yo together over second st)x2. Rep from * around. Fasten off.

Weave in loose ends. Hand wash, block to finished measurements and let dry.

ALL CROCHET VERSION BRIM:

Round 26: *1sc-tbl in ea of next 7 sts, sc2tog-tbl in next 2 sts. Rep from * around. Do not join. Work in spiral for remainder of hat. — 64 sts

Rounds 27 – 31: rep round 26. Slst to next st. Fasten off.
