A triangular top down construction of offset medallion lace repeats for the entire shawl, and the edging is a modification of the original pattern with exaggerated scalloping for an visually stunning border.

• 1 skein Be So Fine Yarn by Kristin Omdahl (4oz/113g, 650yds/594m, 100% bamboo) in Tropical Hot Coral
• Size G/7 (4.5mm) hook, or size to obtain correct gauge
• Removable stitch markers
• Yarn needle

Gauge:
1 rep and 4 rows = 2ó” (6.5cm) in Petal pat after blocking
Special Stitches
Dc5tog (double crochet 5 together): [Yo, pull up a loop in indicated st, yo and draw through 2 loops] 5 times, yo and draw through all 6 loops on hook.
Dtr3tog (double treble crochet 3 together): * Yo 3 times, pull up a loop in indicated st, [yo and draw through 2 loops] 3 times; rep from * twice more, yo and draw through all 4 loops on hook.
Petal Pattern
(multiple of 10 ch + 3 for foundation)
Row 1 (RS): Sk 6 ch, dc in each of next 5 ch, * ch 2, sk 2 foundation ch, dc in next ch, ch 2, sk 2 foundation ch, dc in each of next 5 ch, ch 2, dc in last ch.
Row 2: Ch 5 (counts as 1 dc and 2 ch), 5 dc in 1st sp, ch 2, dc5tog over next 5 dc, * ch 2, 5 dc in next dc, ch 2, dc5tog over next 5 dc; rep from * to end, ch 2, 5 dc in last sp, ch 2, dc in 3rd of beg ch-5 of prev row.
Row 3: Ch 5 (counts as 1 dc and 2 ch), dc in each of next 5 dc, * ch 2, dc in next dc5tog, ch 2, dc in each of next 5 dc; rep from * to end, ch 2, dc in 3rd of beg ch-5 of prev row.
Rep rows 2 and 3 only for Petal pat.
Instructions
Row 1 (RS): Ch 5 (counts as 1 dc and 2 ch), dc in 5th ch from hook, [ch 2, dc in same ch] twice – 3 ch-2 sps
Row 2: Ch 5 (counts as 1 dc and 2 ch), 5 dc in ch-2 sp, (ch 2, 5 dc in next ch-2 sp) twice, ch 2, dc in 3rd of beg ch-5 of prev row.
Row 3: Ch 5 (counts as 1 dc and 2 ch), dc in each of next 5 dc, [ch 2, dc in next sp, ch 2, dc in each o next 5 dc] twice, ch 2, dc in dc in 3rd of beg ch-5 of prev row.
Row 4: Work in Petal pat beg with a pat row 2 – 3 dc5tog. Mark center dc5tog.
Row 5: Work in established Petal pat to marked dc5tog, (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc) in marked dc5tog, work as established to end.
Row 6: Work as established to center 3 dc, [5 dc in next dc, ch 2] 3 times, work as established to end – 4 dc5tog.
Row 7: Work as established to center 3 5-dc groups, dc in each of next 5 dc, [ch 2, dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, dc in each of next 5 dc] twice, work as established to end.
Row 8: Work in established Petal pat – 7 dc5tog.
Rep rows 5-8 only 7 more times, then rep rows 5-7 only once more – 36 dc5tog on next-to-last row.
Edging
Next 2 rows:
Row 1: Ch1, sc in 1st dc, * ch 5, dtr3tog over first 3 sts in 5-dc group, ch3, dtr3tog over 3rd, 4th and 5th dc of same 5-dc group, ch 5, sc in next dc; rep from * to end.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in 1st sc, * 5 dc in next ch-5 sp, 5 dc in next ch-3 sp, 5 dc in next ch-5 sp, sc in next sc; rep from * across. Fasten off.
Finishing
Hand wash. Block to measurements and allow to dry. Weave in loose ends.

This is gorgeous! I’ve got one question – when do you work Row 1 of the 3 row petal pattern sequence? I think I’ve messed up; in the body of the pattern, row 4, I started with row 2 of the petal pattern sequence. Is that correct? Love your work! Thanks.
I know you wrote this 5 years ago, but I was wondering the same thing. It looks like mine is going ok right now and appears to match with the chart. I wonder if the petal pattern is generic to other patterns and for this particular one, you don’t need that row? I hope your shawl came out nice 🙂
I don’t understand your questions, however, this is what I answered to the comment you are referring to: the petal pattern section is even in rows for gauge swatch purposes. The top down increasing shawl begins at “Instructions” section and is a 3-row repeat, repeating rows 5 – 7.

I was a Floridian for 47 years and am now retired in Ecuador for 5 years, with lots of time to crochet. Dear Kristin, I love your crocheted shawl (and knitted ones). I do the Key West crocheted shawl, with the diagram it is so much easier for me to do the project. Thank you for the diagram and the pattern of the shawl. Dare I say this – you are a genius because the shawl designs are simple yet elegant, crisp motifs/themes, full of clarity and uncluttered.
