The Sweet Clara Crochet Top is a GORGEOUS and easy to crochet pattern from the top down. The raglan shaping is worked within the stitch pattern. The whole top is worked in the round and it is completely seamless. Sizes range from 36″ bust to 52″ bust with ample flounce to showcase the yarn’s incredible drape at the hemline.

This top features Be So Sporty Yarn. This yarn is #2 sport weight, 100% bamboo, and comes in gorgeous, hand dyed colors I dye myself in my Florida Studio.

Inspiration for the Sweet Clara Crochet Pullover FREE Crochet Pattern

I used to travel a lot in my business, going from craft trade shows and conventions all over the country to sell, teach and promote my books, patterns and yarns. On one particular cross-country trip several years ago, I thought it would be a fun challenge to see if I could make a crochet top during my flights from Southern Florida to Northern California. I brought 2 balls of Be So Sporty Yarn and a size H/8 (5mm) crochet hook with me on the flight. I started with my favorite beginning for a crochet pullover, my foundation oval technique. Then I added 4 double increase corners for a raglan yoke. Separated for body and sleeves. And then crocheted even int he round until I ran out of yarn! And guess what? My top was finished (minus weaving in ends) before I landed! The town I visited was called Santa Clara, California. So I thought it would only be fitting to call my gorgeous lace crochet top the Sweet Clara Top!

Gauge
Note: The stitch pattern used is very flexible, and its gauge measurements change when it is tugged either width-wise or lengthwise. To reflect this, two gauge measurements are provided. Both should be measured after blocking. The hem edge will be larger than the bust circumference for this same reason, even though no shaping is used in the bottom portion (Body) of the garment.
Gauge when tugged width-wise: 1 rep of Scallops pat = 3” across and 1¾” in length
Gauge when tugged lengthwise: 1 rep of Scallops pat = 2” across and 2” in length

When I try to print it out to use it, the right side of the pattern is cut off. Can you please email me this pattern…thanks

    • Kristin Omdahl says:

Sometimes browsers are not compatible with this. I have heard that emailng the pattern to yourself solves this issue. Try that. If all else fails, email me through the contact button and I can send it to you.

  2. Eugenia says:

It is a beautiful pattern, easy to follow with the video. I made it, but for a person like me 1.47 mt and 47 kg. it is too big, my sister is so happy now that it is for her.

  3. Ursula says:

I have a bust circumference of 38. Do you suggest I go with a small or medium? I see your finished bust measurements… does that include any ease?

    • Kristin Omdahl says:

All sizes begin with the same number of foundation ovals. This is a wide neck top that should fit over your head just fine. The sizing is all done in the yoke, increasing in length and width per size. Hope that helps!
      xoxo, Kristin

  4. Karen says:

I have crocheted many things over 30+ years but I do not get your instructions. Where are the increases on the rows as you go. If I start out with 20" around as in your diagram where are the increases on each round so that it will fit. I don’t think 20" will stretch that much. Need more instructions for me.

  5. Karen says:

I’ve watched up to video 3 but to me it seems you say to do it one way but instructions say different. For scallops which I’m on says rep 3-5 r you doing raglan increase in both rounds. Then later you have for these sizes do this then last size do this. Don’t you have a whole pattern in a diagram and on each round it would say increase this many for these sizes. Mb I’ll give up on your patterns b y t they are nice.

    • Kristin Omdahl says:

      Dear Karen,

I am sorry you are struggling with this pattern. I have directed you to the line by line instructions with multiple sizes, plus charts for the lace pattern and raglan shaping as well as the 8-part video series to support this free pattern. I have not seen any photos or specific questions from you, and that makes it impossible for me to help you any further. You are welcome to email me with specific questions and I will try to help you if I can.
      Warm regards,

      Kristin

  6. Melenie says:

I am currently working this pattern which I love so far. My question is …. For Last Size only increase round. Am I understanding that I am to place 23 or 24 sc in ch-1 space.

    • Kristin Omdahl says:

Thanks for letting me know. It is a typo! You should be working in the established pattern, which is to just work one sc in that ch1 space. I have revised the pattern. Thank you so much!
      xoxo, Kristin

  7. Dawn Stauber says:

I love all your patterns! Such talent. I made this too and it’s beautiful. I did struggle with it, going back and forth between video and instruction. When I figured it out it was really easy. Please keep creating and sharing your patterns, I don’t want to make any others!

  8. Betty Visser says:

Dear Kristin, are you always using a crochet hook 5 mm for the yarn be so sporty? Or is this only for the lace looking more open.
    It looks so beautiful.

    • Kristin Omdahl says:

You can use a range of hook sizes, depending on the look you are interested in. Yes, for lace a 5mm or 6mm is nice. 4mm is nice for a closed stitch pattern. I even use 2.75mm with it for bikinis. It all depends on the look you are wanting to achieve.

      Hope that helps!
      xoxo, Kristin

I am so excited. My order has shipped and is due in on the 20th. This is better than Christmas. I have wanted to order some of your yarn and I finally was able to and I am thrilled.

  10. Susan Pariseau says:

There is one issue I have not found a good resolution for especially, when working with small yarns even a bit slippery for lack of a better word. I have seen numerous ways of joining yarn to continue working a project. When it comes to working a lace pattern and joining another skein there doesn’t seem to be a good way to keep the join hidden and keep the yarn from slipping or un-tying after it has been worn and washed numerous times. I hope I said that so you understand what I mean. There are actually two issues. Hiding the join when working a lace pattern and keeping it from coming undone in the future. I have resorted in taking a needle and thread and adding a few stitches, in a matching color, to prevent it from coming undone. I have seen some use fabric glue. You are a natural and I thought if anyone could give me the solution you could. I admire the work you do. You are a natural with a talent I wish I had 1/2 your ability. You are good at everything you set your mind to do. I could talk to you for hours and learn so much. One last question. Do you see the finished product in your mind even before you sit down to do the work of making it and writing the pattern? Creative people have always interested me. I have so many ideas but just can’t seem to get them from my head to finished product, frustrating……KEEP up the great work you do. You are an inspiration to me and so many more…

I have been crocheting for several years but have only really mastered the granny square, could never make heads nor tails of a pattern, be it written or a diagram, but this pattern with the crochet-along videos was easy enough for this complete newb to follow. I made a few errors along the way – somehow ended up with an extra increase on one side of the raglan!! but wasn’t about to unpick it as I didn;t realise until I had completed another 6 or 7 rounds LOL – I found this pattern was forgiving enough to allow for my errors without noticing (to the untrained eye).
I will definitely be making more of these.

  12. Sharon says:

Thank you for this free pattern which is so versatile! I added a variation of the "flowerette" trim you described for the bottom of the dress to the bottom of my top. I changed the chain 2 to a chain one. I love the way it added some weight and prevented the bottom from rolling up. My next project is to make this pattern into a dress! Thank you again and God Bless.

  13. vicki says:

I would like to make this but not sure what size. Can you tell me what size was made for the girl in the picture? I think we are probably around the same size. Thanks !

  14. Diane says:

Hi Kristin, I am in love with this pattern and finally after 3 frogging sessions I got it lol. It is all my error’s but the pattern I found a little difficult and I thank you so much for the video how to’s. I just purchased the Trixie Top and had some trouble so I frogged that and found this one. I am hoping that this pattern will hep me a bit more with the Trixie Top. I did see the video for that but it was a little more basic than what I needed. I just wanted to tell you that as long as I didn’t give up and read and re-read the pattern and listened and re-listened to your instructions it got easier and easier. Thank you for such a beautiful top, I hope to make a long sleeve one after I finish this one. Thank you again. Diane

  15. Tee says:

I have been crocheting for a few years, but still consider myself a beginner(ish).
I followed your pattern, along with the videos and found it quite easy to follow. There were one or two parts that I just couldn’t make sense of but I find crochet is so forgiving of mistakes, so I just bumbled through and have now made two of these tops and have had several compliments. Thank you for sharing x
